COMMENTARY
Chronicles Chapter 11 was about David, who was then made the second king of Israel. The people gathered before David who was at Hebron, and they welcomed him as their king. They proclaimed that the Lord sent David to shepherd his people, when even during the time of Saul, he was the one who brought his people in.
During this time, David made a covenant at Hebron between the people in the presence of the Lord. According to the word of God by Samuel, David was anointed king over all of Israel as it was the will of the Lord.
David and all of the Israelites traveled to Jerusalem, which was then known as Jebus, because this was where the Jebusites were. The inhabitants of Jebus told David that he could not enter the land, however David took over the land and said that whoever strikes the inhabitants of Jebus first will be named chief and captain.
David Builds a Great City
Zeruiah had a son, who was named Joab, who went first and he was made chief. David dwelt in this stronghold, Zion, and it was called the City of David. He built a great city around the land and the rest was repaired by Joab. David became a great king as the Lord God was with him.
In his great city, David had mighty men who were strengthened by him in his kingdom. These men, who were from his kingdom, along with all the people, made him king according to the world of God. Jashobeam, who was born of Hachmonite, was the chief of the captains.
David’s Warriors
He was able to lift his spear to 300 men and killed them all at once. After him were other great and mighty men, among them were chief men, warriors, and those who fought alongside David during his reign in Jerusalem.
lesson
i. It is sad that the tribes only turned to David when their previous choice (Ishbosheth, a son of Saul) was taken away. On the same principle, it’s sad when Christians only really recognized Jesus as king when other choices crumble. We should choose Jesus outright, not just when other options fail
The elders of Israel received David’s leadership because he was an Israelite himself and
he already had displayed his ability to lead.
The elders of Israel received David’s leadership because it was evident God called him to lead.
i. These three characteristics should mark anyone who leads God’s people.
· A leader must belong to God’s people in heritage and heart.
· A leader must demonstrate capability to lead.
· A leader must have an evident call from God.
ii. The elders of Israel received David’s leadership when they saw these things in David. When we see these same things in leaders we should also receive their leadership
Talking about David mighty men
It’s important to understand that David was nothing without his mighty men, and they were nothing without him. He was their leader, but a leader is nothing without followers – and David had the mighty men to follow him. These men didn’t necessarily start as mighty men; many were some of the distressed, indebted, and discontent people who followed David at Adullam Cave (1 Samuel 22:1-2).
